I applaud you, I could not agree more....

With all due respect, it's precisely the snarky tone behind the "sheaf of wheat" comments that so often put off people. Yes, I know it's meant to be tongue-in-cheek. But someone you might not have noticed, someone who might otherwise have enjoyed participating in SCA, may just decide that the sarcasm and the, dare I say, unintentional intellectual snobbery behind such statements just gives them a negative vibe.

I hate to sound so PC... this is such an amazingly welcoming group. I just cringe at the sarcasm, I guess. I've called it garb for 20 years in blissful innocence, and suddenly I'm all wet? Nah... just tell me, "Hey, look what that word actually means... tee hee, maybe we should call it period clothing, eh?" It's how we learn from each other.

At least until we're all fluent in Middle English or whatever language our chosen persona uses.... :-)

    Salut cozyns,

Let's review the manner in which this discussion keeps cropping up. Someone
with experience in SCA matters is preparing to attend a quasi-official SCA
function and asks, "Should I wear garb for this?" A feisty antigarbist
responds with some bit of sarcasm like, "Why would you want to wear a sheaf
of wheat?"
