Hi Uther,
I am fond of the Viking Answer Lady's Website (belonging to Mistress Gunnvör
silfrahárr) http://www.vikinganswerlady.com/ and I asked Coblaith a similar
question the other day and got the following links:
> What were people wearing in 890 (anywhere in Europe?).
Thora Sharptooth's got good resources on what the Norse were wearing
<http://www.cs.vassar.edu/~capriest/vikresource.html>. The one thing she
lacks is photos; look to the Hurstwic site for that
<http://www.hurstwic.org/history/articles/daily_living/text/
clothing.htm>. (Let me know if you want additional links to "how to"
stuff for Norse women's overdresses.)
Finnacan Dub's "Early Gaelic Dress: An Introduction"
<http://b-b-fam.home.texas.net/Coblaith/EarlyGaelicDress/default.html>
covers what the Irish and Scottish Gaels were wearing.
I found an illustration from around 900, made in northern France, that shows
male dress for the period
<http://www.mnemosyne.org/mmw/fullsize/mmw_10b5_001r_init.jpg>.
Regia Anglorum's period starts a little later--around 950--but their
gear <http://www.regia.org/members/basclot.htm> resembles what you see on
the above three sites. I think it likely that the Anglo-Saxons were wearing
similar stuff around the turn of the century; it seems to be the norm for
that period in northern Europe.
I will probably be dressing as the Danish would, and have been doing a bit
of research on the clothes. If anyone would be interested in a sewing day
(sometime after our Fall Baronial event), let me know. The Norse styles
look very simple, and would be very easy to put together.
