Funny...this is pretty much the same thing I tell folks who are
interested in finding a falconry sponsor to become licensed falconers.

Salut cozyns,

Lord Charles said

I'd love to be a knight. Hell, I'd like to be a squire, though nobody's
invited me to, so far. But I'm not about to go and pretend I'm a knight
when I haven't actually been knighted. That would be so contrary to the
honor a knight should embody as to (hopefully) be unthinkable.
<<<<

Every knight does this a little differently, and some of us have been
less than consistent in the execution. In my experience, though, knights
rarely ask fighters to become their squires. A few knights and
masters-at-arms insist that their squires be by invitation only, but I'm
fairly certain they're the exception.

So, here's my advice for would-be squires:

Step one: find a member of the Chivalry you would feel comfortable
working for and learning from. This must be someone you respect and
should be someone you believe can teach you. Generally, I believe that
means someone within a certain range of your own body type and
capabilities, but this is not absolutely necessary. The conventional
wisdom says it should be someone in your own group, but don't let this
deter you if you're willing to do the necessary travel (my knight lived
four hours away, and Count Timo's lived six hours away).

Step two: do a little side research. Do you think you can get along with
the knight's lady (lord)? Can you get along with the other squires? How
much this matters depends on how the peer in question runs his
household.

Step three: if you're concerned about rejection or that you might be
ruining your chances by being too forward, talk to one of the peer's
squires. Ask if the peer in question is interested in taking new squires
(the answer is more often yes than no). If yes, tell the squire that
you're interested in becoming that peer's squire.

When I worked up the nerve to ask my knight, I told him I was uncertain
of the protocol. He replied, "Them what don't ask, don't get."
