I am not weighing in on this topic in general, just on the specific
question of what happens when you answer the same question 20 times. The
answer is that the reply becomes a non-thinking reflex. It also becomes
very polished and slick with any sharp corners knocked off. That does
not mean it is a BETTER reply, just polished. It is also very easy to
hear something that kinda sounds like the same question and just fire
off the pat reply. It is easy to miss the nuances of the question
actually being asked and just answer the question as you want to answer it.
This does not happen because anyone is dishonest or cagey or a natural
politician. It happens because we are human and that is how the brain
works in a repetitive situation.
The candidates have things we want to communicate to you an you have
information you want to get from us. The two may not match. In the best
situation we can go back and forth until you get the info you need and
we get across our message. That gives you the most information. The best
place for that to happen seems to be in a face to face chat, not a Q&A
or "grill the candidates" forum, whether that is online or at a meeting
called for that purpose. Even one on one there is a huge difference
between someone sitting down to chat with you and someone grilling you
with their questions; we have done both in the past week. Of course, it
is not possible to have a private chat with everyone in the barony so
the best we can do is probably these Q&A forums.
