It's been used in Ansteorra for a few decades too. You still hear it
pop up from time to time.

Subject: [Bryn-gwlad] Tolkien
I admit I have never read LOTR but I had the Hobbit read to me when I
was a little girl for bedtime stories (my Mom is a mega-Tolkien fan!)
You can imagine my surprise as I was watching ROTK for the first time,
and noticed that the oath Pippin gives to the Steward of Gondor is
nearly and almost word for word the same as the oath of fealty that I
gave to my Knight when I was taken as a squire! When I asked about it
later, my Knight told me that it was the oath he'd given to his knight,
and so on. Apparently, Tolkien was muchly used back in the early days
of the SCA in northern Cali, and its residual effects can still be found
to this day. :)
I dont know if its still being used now back home anymore (I got squired
back in 94) as I recall Knights and squires writing their own oaths of
fealty was starting to be in vogue. However, I also recall that keeping
'tradition' alive, which back home was said to 'carry the weight of
law,' was hugely important to many people, especially the Chivalry.
Just a lil tale to tell,

Tivar is right. Tolkien isn't off-topic for the SCA. While "Lord of the
Rings" didn't immediately (first read the books in the mid-60's) get me
into the SCA, it sure helped to get a grasp of what it was all about
when I was introduced back in the early 80's. And now that the movies
are out, the Rohrim are without a doubt northmen with horses in place of
boats.
