Penances are those little flags you see on Saxon boats that flutter bravely in the wind as the boat sinks after being set on fire by Vikings.  They make great collector items.  Many Viking halls have Penance collections on the walls to cover up the beer stains and axe dings.
   
  Or they were also mutterings said to Odin, such as "Dear Odin.  I'm really REALLY sorry I only plundered 9 cities this year instead of the 10 I promised.  As penance, I will only drink two enormous barrels of ale instead of three.  And then pass out."

  We encourage performances to accompany the theme of the event which is Alfred the Great (ei, Saxons/Vikings 900ish)
  You can come at it from the plundering end or the penance end<G>.  Although I'm sure there was a loving, giving side to these people, it escapes me at the moment..LOL.
