I didn't see explicit answers to the blacksmithing questions, but you 
can buy coal in town
Callahan's General store, down south (ask for it up front and drive 
around back to pick up 25? or 50? lb bags), and a bit further south, is 
Centaur Forge Texas in New Braunsfels, where  you can get just about any 
shoeing related blacksmith stuff you might want.

Callahan's used to carry basic smithing stuff, but stopped a few years 
back. Centaur is worth the trip though.
