We also have indestructible shields and no lower leg targeting, I am not a fan of holing onto the barrier, but being close to or in contact with the barrier with at least 1 part of the body is my prefered method.

The convention I've seen used most for barrier fights nowadays require
the fighter to be 'in contact' with the barrier, but not with a hand.
The combatant is required to keep his/her front leg in contact with the
barrier.
