Personally I prefer the convention that one stay at the barrier. In
other words duck and dodge all you want but don't withdraw completely
away from the barrier. You know it when someone steps away from the
barrier during the fight, no need to force them to hold onto it or to
keep in contact with it. With a great sword for instance, just fight
it out at the barrier...dodging sideways is cool and in the spirit,
stepping out of the fight, not so cool.
Not sure whether that is the old way, new way, or period way :-)
