It wouldn't surprise me too much for it to be an SCA convention, not a
period one, aimed at preventing the fighters from retreating away from
the barrier (and thus out of the fight) when hard pressed.
Were that the aim, I would probably prefer to have a strip or box on the
ground one must keep their foot inside, since it's somewhat awkward (for
me at least) to keep a knee against the barrier while trying to fight. I
can agree with the idea of keping the fighters up at the barrier (since
the loser then needs only step back to acknowledge defeat) but it's
harder for me to stand comforatbly with my knee against the barrier.
