As to barriers themselves, there's more historical
precident to _not_ holding on to the barrier. All of
the images in my head of barrier fights used two
handed weapons, so you couldn't really hold on. 
Single sword at the barrier can be fun too, but from
what I can tell it was invented in the SCA.
