There are two types of non-skid rug underlay.

The kind for carpets

somewhat "sticky" to the touch.  That might make it "hold on" to your 
box, but you should be aware that it will also cling to dust.

The kind for hard flooring 
<http://www.rugstudio.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=8651> is 
very similar to the shelf liner mentioned above.  It's made not only in 
PVC but in natural rubber 
<http://www.greensage.com/rugstore/pbHewgrip.html>.  (I've not seen 
natural-rubber shelf liner anywhere, though it's possible it's 
available.)
