The Bryn Gwlad Chronicler edits, publishes, and distributes the
barony's official newsletter, the "It Cometh in the Mail". I have held
the position for almost 2 years now. (September's issue will be my
24th.) The time has come to identify my successor. It's a fun office;
I've really enjoyed it.
I have written up a description of the duties of the office of
Chronicler, and posted it at
<http://b-b-fam.home.texas.net/BrynGwladChronicler/chronicling.html>.
I've tried to make it exhaustive, so there'll be no surprises for
whoever takes over the job.
I'm also half- or three-quarters of the way through writing up a
(highly unofficial) handbook, with details like how to get the masters
to the printer, where to pick up the copies, and exactly what
statements every issue has to include, along with tips on finding
content, keeping information current, and maintaining efficient
records, that should make it easy for even a novice to hit the ground
running. I hasten to add that, while I do not intend to stalk the next
Chronicler, I will be happy to make myself available to her or him as a
consultant, especially in the first few months, should (s)he wish me
to.
I can assure the potential applicant that there are a comfortable
number of individuals in the Barony willing and able to provide content
to the newsletter on a regular basis. Several officers and guild
leaders write regular columns, now, and there are a few other
individuals who find time to put together an article every two or three
months. (I even have a couple of pieces in reserve for the next time
there's a blank page or two to be filled.) It's not at all necessary
that the new Chronicler try to write everything personally, if (s)he is
simply willing to send out a reminder now and then.
All of this adds up to me urging anyone who even vaguely thinks (s)he
might be willing to serve as Chronicler to give the matter serious
thought. It is a vital position--required, in fact, if we are to
remain a barony--and one that affords many opportunities to learn, to
acquaint oneself with the Society and its local members, and to share
ideas and information with the rest of the populace. You needn't have
a background in publishing, or be a long-time member, to do it justice.
Enthusiasm and a willingness to request help when it's needed will go
a long way.
Applications for the position should be submitted to the Southern
Regional Chronicler (with courtesy copies to the Baron, the Seneschale,
and myself) by the July business meeting. All the addresses you'll
need are in the back of the Black Star. Each application must include
a completed Application for Office form
<http://seneschal.ansteorra.org/forms/Application.pdf>, a photocopy of
the applicant's photo I.D. and current S.C.A. membership card, and a
statement of the applicant's reasons for applying and qualifications
for the post.
If you're considering applying but undecided, please feel free to
contact me to address any questions or concerns you might have. I'm
really hoping for a diverse pool of applicants and a smooth transition
to the next Chronicler's term of service.
