Ya when it comes to something, like games...whether games on wood, fabric or
drawn in the sand not being documented?...LOL well...something like that I'd
expect would not necissarly be documented..., we grabbed some wood and drew
on it to make a game while camping and were bored....not period? /shrug

IMO some things like that are on the creative front, if the items existed
and period people wanted to use them, had the will to and items to use, most
people were very creative, poor person couldn't afford fancy smancy they
would use cheaper material or a rock, or a piece of wood for counters,
pieces...cheaper materials might not be documentable....but I would lean
strongly toward the chance of period or existing....

ack did I stumble over a soapbox?

Me, personally...I like authentic except when I'm trying to pack for an
event in my very modern little car. Having to decide what goes and what
doesn't go is based on size and packability. Packing a self-contained pouch
that can be tucked into a corner of a tote is much easier than trying to
find a spot for a box that isn't so compactable. I've seen everything from
chests to small boxes suggested. The fabric games were also suggested are a
common sight at events.

There is also the division between SCA period and time period. There are
many things that have become acceptable and coveted that may not be actually
per*iod* but are per*oid. *While there may not be any documentation for
games that are painted on fabric, I doubt there was a single person who saw
one of Kieran's Dragon games that didn't want one...period or not. I still
regret not commissioning one from her before I left for Drachenwald.
Kieran...are you listening? ~grin~

I love the history that we portray, but I also love the creative and
anachronistic side the SCA. I've also been around long enough to have seen
many things that were declared "not period" as being period as more
documentation becomes available.

Just my two cents,
Ysabeau
