Oh and the only wooden sets I noticed once was in Japan and was shown on a 
woodblock print....

Actually, that is documented, in several instances.  An "improvised
game board for nine men's morris" is among the medieval artifacts found
in York <http://www.iadb.co.uk/secrets/xhbimg/medhoma2.jpg>, for
example.
