I thought all of those wonderful long fibrous plants like flax, rushes,
nettles were usable and used to provide fibers (after retting) to make
"linen" thread in many times and places.

Well, on one hand that does make sense, though would medieval Scots
consider linen clothing to be a sign of a very unfortunate girl? It
certainly isn't as warm as wool, I grant you. The picture I saw of her
made her look like she'd got stuck halfway falling through a big sheaf
of wheat. I think the implication is that she just tied rushes around
herself.
What about the story of the girl who spun stinging nettles into cloth to
make shirts?

In the interest of fairness, I seem to recall a story of a
Scottish girl
whose wicked stepsisters allowed her no cloth for dressmaking.
She was
forced to make a coat for herself out of rushes -- a rashin
coatie.
She ended up with satin slippers and a prince, so perhaps the
wearing of
rushes is a luck-talisman? Can you be certain it would not bring
luck to
you?
