[Bryn-gwlad] historian info

Actually, I am happy to do the web development, as well as deployment,
for such a project. We already have an officers page, of course, although
I would LOVE to have photos to go with the names </hint>. I have
sketched out skeleton pages for Chivalric Combat and Rapier Combat
(and with the advent of a new archery site, I guess I need to add Archery
to that list). There are already several A&S pages... anyone wanting to
write copy for any other "interest" type pages, just go ahead now!
[I know it doesn't show, but I really AM doing work on the website...
it's just that it's kind of an all-or-nothing thing--a partial rollout isn't
really
do-able, and there are a lotta pages :-) I'm also waiting on some DB access
issues with Kingdom.]
Anyway, one of the changes in the works is to make every page not just
printer-friendly but printer-beautiful. Ideally, you will be able to print
out
a perfectly formatted sheet from every page on the web--no cut-off
graphics or funny word-wrap issues. Thus, any page on the web should
be usable as a handout.
And of course there are security issues involved with putting extensive
personal information online. We can put that kind of information behind a
password login, of course, but then you have the problem of newcomers
feeling rebuffed because they don't have the login. I would not support
giving
out passwords by email--it would have to be a personal contact IMO. In the
end, it seems that the best answer is not to include mundane info at all.
Email
is a grey area, since many people don't have a dedicated SCA email account.
But... I absolutely agree with Caladin that, before we go asking people for
their life histories, we should clarify why we're asking... and also with
Ceallach,
that we should see whether any of that information already exists. No point
in doing the same work twice or more. I'm pretty sure that Coblaith the
Diligent
has been doing data collection for the next Domesday for a few months now...
Anyway, speaking strictly for myself, as a (still relatively) new member of
the Barony, I didn't find it difficult to meet people who shared my
interests.
The single thing *I* needed most in my first few months was faces to go
with names (see <hint> above). A couple of people I learned right away
(mostly my fellow Italians, come stai Giotto?), but it was frustrating to be
told "talk to the Seneschal about that" or "the Hospitaler can help you" and
not know who the Seneschal or Hospitaler were (by sight, I mean).
In service,
--Lucia the Loquacious :-)
