If you don't want the in-laws or the HR department at your next job to Google your name on posts to the BG or other Ansteorran lists, you can start here: http://lists.ansteorra.org/listinfo.cgi/bryn-gwlad-ansteorra.org   to log in and change the name that shows when you post. It's not retroactive, of course, but it will affect any posts you make going forward. So instead of 'John Doe' you can show 'HL Ian the She-Deer' or whatever...

For the techies among us, the archived message pages are tagged META NAME="robots" CONTENT="index,nofollow", which means the messages will be indexed, but no links within a message will be followed. As Stefan says, the list software obfuscates email addresses, but whatever name you sign with, that name will be in the search engines.

It is possible to make the archived list pages non-indexable by Google and other search engines, but in addition to hiding names, it would also hide a great deal of useful information from the web. On the whole, I think they've chosen the right balance.

  I suspect it is because this list is also available as a newsgroup as well as a mail list. It is also possible for search engines to find things like the archives if they are available on a server without requiring a password.  In the case of the Ansteorra server, at least, when this came up in a discussion recently, it was pointed out that email addresses are disguised or removed before the archives are created.


  Of course if Bush and his "friends" want your info all they have to do is ask a cooperative telephone company and get the info that way. And there is nothing you can do about it, since your congress is likely to vote the utilities immunity from all such suits that might arise.
