[Bryn-gwlad] FW: Raisin/Grape Toxicity

The potential toxicity of raisins and grapes has been known for a few years now, but hasn't really gotten a lot of attention because, I think, veterinarians don't see these cases too often. It has been theorized that the danger is because raisins especially are concentrated sources of chemicals found in the soil, air, and water and those sprayed on the plants. I don't know whether anyone has followed this up with a study or not.

I do know that different dogs seem to have different levels of tolerance for raisins and grapes. I know this because I have the dubious honor of sharing my home with a Belgian Tervuren named Flyer, who has committed enough dietary indiscretions to kill a whole pack of hounds. She is a champion counter-cruiser who not once, but twice in eight days stole and ate full 2# containers of raisins. Not organic ones, either. Not only did this not kill her, it didn't even make her sick. Since this is only one of her many escapades of food thievery, I can only surmise that she has a strong digestive system and healthy organs, which I attribute, in part, to a bones-and-raw-foods diet.

That said, it is still wise to prevent pets from consuming things known to be potentially harmful. Fortunately, not all dogs are as perpetually hungry, predictably persistent, and sneaky as Flyer.
