Cal,
Draughts (an version of checkers) dates to about 1100. Alquerque preceded draughts in coming out of the middle east. If memory serves, it moved into Spain with the Moors and became popular in parts of Europe. Ur & Senet predate SCA periods by several thousand years (and would have been largely lost by then). Wei Chi (or Go) would also be well withing period for eastern personae. The Tafl games would have been fairly common in parts of Europe during the Middle Ages and latter. Backgammon type games were common as well. There were also a number of chess variants (including circular boards) that were common in medieval periods.
There is a hist-games list that has lots of ideas about various period games. There are about 10 years of archives as I recall. I believe Chas from McGregor Historic games is the moderator. R. C. Bell has a double volume book published by Dover (Board and Table Games from Many Civilizations) that is fairly informative. Ditto for H.J.R. Murray's Board Games other than Chess. Murray is best know for his History of Chess. It is considered the ultimate reference for chess history (and is unfortunately out of print). The original was published in 1913 and was reprinted a couple of times in the mid to late 1980s.
The Game Cabinet is on the web and has some cool information. You might also look at http://jducoeur.org/game-hist/game-rules.html
There is also a chess variant web-site that is worth looking at.

Interesting excuse to play with it some more
Are there any other interesting board types other than 9 man morris and Fox and the hens that folks can point to online?
Obviously chess is period, what about checkers and backgammon?
If anyone has any links to particularly attractive black and white drawings of boards Id greatly appreciate a mention.
I know Im coming into this late
so excuse me if Im causing a rehash of already covered topics.

If I remember correctly, baronies are asked to provide gifts for the crown to give to other crowns at Gulf Wars. Shires are asked to do the same for Pennsic.
The barony decided to provide games as our gift for the next Gulf Wars. Dreda is organizing the creation of the games. I believe it was decided to use boxes instead of fabric or boards. I'm not sure which games were decided on.
I have been making wooden game boards but find that they are heavier and harder to pack than fabric ones. They also don't lend themselves to spontaneous games because you can't carry them with you easily. I might switch to fabric drawstring sets in the future when I finish my stock of boards. If I make them so they can be drawn up into a pouch, I can hang it from my belt and carry it with me instead of having to go back to camp to get the board and stuff.

Just to refresh my memory,
We want period games crafted by BrynGwladi so that they can be gifts for an event, yes?
Gulf wars? I can't seem to recall the event.
Thanks,

I bought a book at Pennsic that is a comprehensive guide to period games. I'm hoping it is in the box that I have a friend mailing to me and not in my luggage because my luggage hasn't made it back from Pennsic yet. : ( If and when I get the book I will be more than happy to bring it out. It is the latest edition of the book that Pegasus has.

Subject: A special offer from DBBC and the British Museum Press
Just published in the UK and on its way to us even as my grubby, stubby
fingers type this message, is a book from the British Museum that is
causing some excitement within the walls of the Oxbow/DBBC offices.
"Ancient Board Games in Perspective" presents papers from a conference
that took place at the BM in 1990. Covering the games of the Egyptians,
Greeks, Romans, Mesopotamians, Indians and Chinese and with special
sections on Chess, Backgammon and Mankala, the papers are truly
all-encompassing.
What is more, we are delighted to offer the book at a special
pre-publication price of $75 (the book is regularly $100) until the end of
September 2007.
Click the link below for a full list of papers and contributors. We should
have the book by the middle of September at the latest and will look
forward to shipping your orders as soon as it arrives.
With regards,
Ian Stevens
