While modern rules for chess were present within period, there are a
variety of different rules for chess and chess type games. The development
of the queen chess piece is also within period (I have at home a biased but
well researched book on the subject.)
Within period there were men who went from court to court and lived on
their expertise in playing chess. Professional chessplayers seem to have a
long and illustrious history. On a side note there are several period
chess books written within period as well.

(who knows a fair amount about the history and development of chess thanks
to her SO who teaches it professionally).
