First, by "early period" what do you mean?  Also, are you looking at Italian
stuff?

Best  I can tell, for most women from about 1300 forward, if they wore any
sort of "cloak" (mantello) it was rectangular or semi circular.

I have been looking at coats to wear with my late 15th cent. Florentine
stuff, and the only women I can find that are wearing coats seem to be
wearing men's coats and nothing else (I am fairly sure that this is
something that Beatrice would be excited about).

I prefer a coat because it's got sleeves, and therefore more useful for me,
and while it's not accurate, will probably make a man's coat and wear it
along with some sort of back story to explain why.
