[Bryn-gwlad] Arrow Shaft weight?

For a bow the size you use, I would stick with the 11/32nd shafts. As for spine weight you seem to have the right ideas; it could be more or less depending on how far you pull your bow and the material of the shaft. I am not sure if there are any differences between the recommended spine weight for recurves or longbows. Since I use a 40 pound longbow my spine weights are 40-45 pounds which works well for me. Another consideration is the length of the arrow depending on your draw length. While these may be too light for your bow, you are more then welcome to try them for your wife’s bow or your own.

There are several members of the Barony that are active in arrow making, Richard, Sarah, Jason, and myself ( I am just starting) come to mind. Several also offer custom arrows for sale at better than retail prices (I believe). I would be more than happy to discuss with you several of the methods of staining and fletching since each has it’s unique advantages and disadvantages. Prepare to become addicted again, I know it is happening to me. Now I want to make arrows even if I have more than I need at the moment.

If I can be of any help please feel free to contact me offline.

Now that we have a practice area again, me and my lady would like to get back to shooting....and now that my shoulder is healed, although still out for heavy fighting.

The standard wooden arrows you buy around town are just too light (?) for my wifes bow at 45 lb.s and mine at 50 lb.s, as the arrows tend to porpoise when fired. Both boths are recuves with fiberglass limbs.

So my question is how do you figure out what spine weight (?) you need and how do you go about making arrows, been at least 20+ years since I made any arrows.

From what I have been able to find so far, my wife needs 45-50 (iv-iv+) and mine will need 50-55 (v-v+) per spine charts. So what diamiter shaft does this corrispond into? Haven't been able to find that yet.

  sincerely,
  Barnet
