I always hated those type of exchanges....either you have to decide to take 
what you and someone else wants....or you have something you wanted 
taken....

There was also the number from a hat drawn matching a gift with matching 
number....

I like the idea of a gift exchange.   One of the
things that we did back east was everyone put a
generic gift into a pile   someone chose a gift.   the
next person could either choose a gift from the pile
or the gift another person got.    a gift can only be
"stolen" 3 times.    It is easier than pulling names.
as we don't have to worry if someone will be there.
We just bring one gift per adult.
