[Bryn-gwlad] painting plastic canvas

Several of the canvas tent painting sites I've seen lately all mention
exterior latex house paint watered down 1:1.  This help thin it so it
isn't too runny, thereby bleeding; and not too thick so it doesn't crack
when dried.  Of course, you can get any color you want and the small
pint and quart containers last a long time.

my first recommendation is to not paint the plastic canvas, but to 
instead paint panels (sheets, cotton yardage, etc.) that have been 
prepped and fitted to the spaces they are covering. yes, it would be 
work, but would be more likely to retain the paint.

if you decide to go the route of painting, i recommend using paint that 
is flexible like acrylic. latex (house paint) is not as flexible over 
time. the surface will have to prepped the same as cloth.

Surface prepping for acrylic paints (most surfaces)
1. lightly sand with fine sand paper, the area to be painted so that it 
has some texture to stick to (skip for cloth)
2. paint the sanded area with acrylic gesso to bind the paint to the
surface 3. paint with acrylic paints, either pre-mixed or standard
palette of 
colours

any book on acrylic painting will give details about how to prepare and 
apply paint for best results. acrylic paint does fade in sunlight, 
especially reds, so be prepared to do touch ups on a seasonal basis. i 
have had things i've painted last several seasons before needed to 
repaint or replace them.
