We had another great turnout for practice this week. My rough count is 16 fighters in armor with another 3 fighters who were at practice, but unable to fight because of health/injuries.
Starting with this practice, I'm going to send out a short summary of what we did at practice, what worked, what didn't and where I see that we need work.
We started tonight with about 15-20 minutes of formation drills. For these drills I wanted everyone in their helms and carrying their weapons. It's hard to hear in a melee and I at least want everyone used to hearing commands through helms. We had some trouble with the Refuse the Left/Right command. Remember: On Refuse the Left, the shieldman on the right end is the pivot point. He turns in place. The left end moves in a backward arc at the fastest walk he can manage. He sets the pace. The line dresses to the pivot point and moves in a backward arc at the pace set by the left end shield. The line should stay dressed and even through out this manuver. In general, the unit should not have to refuse more than 90 degrees unless something has gone very wrong. It was GREAT to see a bigger turn out of shieldmen this week. Without shields, the unit has little defense and little ability to press an enemy or to take/hold ground. We were MUCH closer to a balance unit this week.
After formation drills, we broke up into 5 3-4 man units and practiced small unit melees for about 30-45 minutes. we did a good job of working together and seeking numerical advantages. However, it was observed that there was little communication going during any of the melees. Remember to talk to your buddies. Let them know what you see and where you see problems/opportunities.
To end the night we split into 2 teams and worked on static line fighting. We were doing some good stuff, but still need to work on communication. I'd like to see more team work between spears and glaives.
All in all, we had a great practice. I was very pleased with the big turnout and the enthusiasm on the field. Yes, we have things to work on, but that is what practice is for.
I plan to have much more in depth discussion about today's practice and where we want to head on the BG War Company list. If you are not signed up for the list, I encourage you to do so.
I appreciate everyone's hard work and commitment.
Yours in Service to Bryn Gwylad,
Centurion Uther
Captain, Bryn Gwylad War Company
