[Bryn-gwlad] OT: Appleworks issue

I've got a problem with my desktop publishing software with which I'm
hoping someone in our tech-savvy barony can assist me. I'm using
Appleworks 6, under Mac OS 10.3.9.

There are a number of characters (like eth and thorn) that can see on
my screen when I'm browsing the Internet or reading my e-mail that
won't appear in text I type in Appleworks. If I try to use the "insert
character" function in the Character Palette nothing happens. If I
cut-and-paste from an HTML document or e-mail I just get a big question
mark. It doesn't matter what font I'm using. It's driving me crazy.
I can SEE the correct letters, but I can't USE them. Aargh!

There's no "encoding" option under Appleworks' preferences. I don't
know how else to address the problem. Please, please e-mail me off
list if you can tell me how to fix this.
