     AD = AS + 1965
          - 1 if before May 1

For example, the start of the Society is the start of AS 1:
1 + 1965 = 1966, and it had to have been May 1.

Maybe more conveniently for dates after the millenium and for going
the other way:

     AS = AD - 2000 + 35
          - 1 if before May 1

('Cause the current year minus 2000 is easy: take the last two
digits.)  For example, right now:

     AS = 08 + 35 - 1 = 42

     AS 12 + 1965 = 1977
