Actually, if one puruses the Guard oath, the Guard is actually sworn to protect the Barony first, then whomever sits on the Halberd throne.  So while the Guard does protect the Baron's person, it would be "technically" feasable to "protect" a Baron with a mental aberration having him "sequestered" for his own good and the good of the Barony.

Very true they are paid and have dedicated themselves to him. However this would be after stepping down and could not apply anymore (besides they could be bribed). Just a thought.

I think the problem with all of these scenerios is the Baronial Guard and what they would have to say about this.  They are, after all, paid by the baron and they aren't meant to be just ceremonial.   


For a similar modern outfit, that goes back to period, see the Swiss Guard which protect the Pope.
