[Bryn-gwlad] How we learned of the SCA

When I went away to college my mother and I found things we could do together to allow us to keep our friendship, one of these things was Texas Ren Faire. In going to the faire with her I learned a love of costuming and reveled in my love of dress-up which I have had all my life. At some point she found some information on the SCA and sent it to me, but I never got around to looking through it.

Fast Forward about a year later and I was sitting in a bar reading a book when a handsome gentleman walked up to me after seeing the cover was a fantasy novel and gave me the best pick-up line I have ever heard "I could make you a queen." Within the week I had made myself a new dress and was off to my first event in Seawinds. The relationship with the gentleman didn't last past that weekend, but I soon discovered this SCA thing combined two of my favorite things, dressing up and chivalrous men, I never looked back :) Within 3 months I had met another handsome fighter that would become my husband and had greatly improved my sewing skills. I also re-discovered my love of theatre and the performing arts in this new venue. 5 years later I may not play as much as I would like and I may never be Queen, but I sure do love playing dress-up as an Italian Lady (and sometimes a boy, or a fool, or a wench, or a.....)

The first time I saw the SCA I was 10 or 11 and in a castle in Germany.I was 
on a school-sponsered field trip one weekend and since there were so many 
kids in the group we were sort of allowed to run wild through the castle. 
There were some ladies in really nice dresses and some lords in armor 
fighting in the open space inside the walls. We all went home and 
played 'King Arthur' for months. My mother siad it was a phase and I'd grow 
out of it.

The second time I saw the SCA I was 19 and in the middle of a nasty divorce. 
My friends were afraid I'd do something crazy if
 they left me alone, so they 
talked me into going to this "event" thing with them. At 6am on a Saturday 
 two of my buddys knocked on the door in full RennFaire Wear and 
dragged me off to the grocery store for supplies. So technically I was 
freaking Mundanes before I knew what one was. Then off to a whirlwind tour of 
the Isle of Lyonesse, were they ditched me to go hang out with some cute 
girls they knew.

It was raining, I didn't own a cloak and my feet hurt from standing in bad 
sheos all day. Then I saw an empty chair just under the edge of a nearby 
pavilion. I plopped down in the chair and stated trying to figure out how to 
get home. Then this *HUGE* guy in armor looms over me. Do you remember the 
first time you saw a guy in armor? I thought he was 12ft tall or something. 
He said "That's my chair." and I started squeaking and trying to get out of 
the way. He took his helmet off, brushed the hair out of his face
 and grinned 
at me and said "It's ok, you can sit there." I was smitten.

He took me around the site, introducing me to people and he let me sit at his 
table with him that night at feast in my borrowed gown. A few years later, he 
asked me to marry him and I did. Esteban is what I remember best about my 
first event.
