[Bryn-gwlad] dogs in Ansteorra

I think the bit about the greyhounds is that there is a specific purpose and reason for them to be at the event. A specific sponsered activity, not just to keep thier owners company.

Perhaps the way to get more breeds involved would be to start up anothe period dog activity such as "scent hunting" or carting demonstrations that are period and documentable with period dogs. Then apply to have these activities represented at Gulf, just as the sight houn coursing activities were added.

I *love* the Far Side!

And again - I am not saying people should try to skirt ADA or SCA or Gulf War the rules, or that I will, by no means.

However, personally, I am a huge fan of consistency in regulations and policy and believe it would be nice to have rulings that applies to all breeds, regardless of whether they look like Kate Moss or not. :D

Having said that, I love greyhounds and my lab's girlfriend is a greyhound. And I haven't put any obstacles into the way of their romance (except that they are both non-reproducing anymore).

But as her owner said, in jest, - "people and dogs who look like supermodels abide by different rules"...

Take care everyone, and be happy - it's Wednesday! We are heading out of the week in a few hours.

Ok...*that's* funny! But, good advice, none the less. I ask people with dogs to please take them away before I do my falconry demos for the very same reason. I certainly wouldn't want poor Snowball to become lunch for one of my birds (and, btw, Stefan has never brought him/her to one of my demos)!

One of my favorite falconry cartoons is a "Far Side" cartoon where there is a large hedge dividing up a field. On one side there is a meeting of "The Tea Cup Poodle Fancier's" club.....on the other, a local falconry meet. The caption says "Trouble brewing".

OMG - I just remembered a story from the Renn Faire in AZ that involved out rpuppy when he was little. Maybe the SCA situationis similar...

So we go out to the Faire with our brand new white puppy who is so tiny he fits in a basket, remembering that in the previous year we saw several people with dogs on leashes at the Faire. This time, the troll person says, "Sorry we cannot allow you to take your dog in." Not one to be easily turned away when a dog is involved, I inquired "Why not? He won't bother anyone and I *promise* he will be with us all the time." The attendant replies "Well, that's not really the issue. Last year we had a falconry demo and someone brought their Teacup Chihuahua. You figure it out."

ROTFL!!!!

I think that's what I will say next time!

This below is not to any one person in particular, I am just ruminating over faceless, nameless silly regulations that defy common sense and appear to be just plain weird reasoning.

Here's what I think - of course dogs have to be leashed and of course they need their shots etc., and of course they need to be nice dogs. From the perspective of the issues mentioned in various above emails and other conversations, greyhounds, hunting dogs such as vizslas etc., are no exception to the issues that ban other breeds. I assume that being a greyhound does not release a dog from having their shots, and the need to be restrained for the part of the day when they are not racing/demoing, yes? So why allow some dogs, just because they appear to be more period, then make the silly excuse of "dogs need to have shots, can't be rowdy whatever". Having a long bloodline does not make a dog less likely to be annoying, have rabies, bite kids, etc.

Also, if someone *really* wants to, they can easily sign their dogs up to be 'service animals' (perhaps 'in training') and go through that loophole. In fact, such 'service animals in training' cannot even be denied from indoor events. I have known some dog enthusiasts who have gotten doctor's notes saying that the presence of their dogs lowers their heart rate, hence the dog must go everywhere with the person.

I haven't had the chance to go to Castleton yet, but I'll do my best to attend an event there and am so glad that dogs (well-behaved, with current shots, on leash etc.) are welcome.

Again, my message is not a response to anyone in particular, I just throw my arms up in despair trying to figure out the situation. Also, the dog - restriction is not an 'SCA thing" in my understanding, since Estrella welcomes dogs with wide arms and paws. Regulations abound - shots, crates etc., can't leave dog unattended. They even give little collars for the dogs so people can write their Mundane/SCA names, households etc. on there in case the doggies run away.

I think it could be resolved at Gulf too in the future, with some new regulations, that I for example would be glad to comply with. Surely there are lawyers among us who can draft some legal language. :D

Ala, for now It will have to be "yes, he looks like a lab but his persona is a greyhound" - that's classic.

Take care,

Lilie

You think you might get by with "but his PERSONA is a greyhound!"?
