Where to begin?
Ansteorra swept all the Chivalric Melee War points--Town Battle, Ravine, Bridge Battle, Open Field and the Castle (The Castle battle was declared a tie since neither side took the castle, but Ansteorra defeated the Trimaran forces in less time).
One of our own, Lord Rhys, was called upon by His Majesty to fight in the Chivalric Champions List and won his point. Vivat Rhys!!!
By my count, BG fielded 22 Chivalric fighters. That represented between one fourth and one fifth of the entire Ansteorran Army.
Of that 22, 18 fielded in various battles for Bryn Gwlad, with Duke Hoegarden, Sir Gideon, and Sir Isfael serving as commanders.
This was the first fighting event for three of our fighters--Rainer, Able and Gundvardr. All three acquitted themselves excellently in the melees. Rainer also fought in the Chivalric Ladies of the Rose tourney. Able fought in every Chivalric war point and every other melee or pick up he could find.
Duke Hoegarden received a Sable Falcon from His Majesty Aaron, after another war of incredible fighting. You just have to see the man in melee with a spear to believe it. Even the Trimarans were cheering for him during the bridge battle.
The Bryn Gwlad unit had an excellent showing in all the Chivalric battles.
In the Town Battle we fought mostly in support of the Midrealm forces on the right and joined in several charges there and up through the center.
In the Ravine, we supported the middle and the left. Ansteorra held these flags for a vast majority of the battle.
In the Bridge Battle we so outnumbered the Trimarran forces that His Majesty called for volunteers to fight on the other side. Sir Isfael volunteered the Southern Region to join the other side (which was incredibly hard--I salute his Chivalry). We fought honorably and well against the Midrealm on the center bridge and never struck a fellow Ansteorran.
My favorite battle of the War was the Open Field. BG and the Southern Region were the front line on the Army's left side and were tasked with advancing ahead of the army to disrupt and buckle the advancing Trimaran line. It was critical that we advance quickly and in tight formation to a very specific point and that we hold against superior numbers long enough for the rest of the army to break the Trimarran flanks. We held, the Trimarran forces on the left were disrupted and our Northern and Coastal units smashed them. In the third open field battle, Trimaris sent one of their elite units, The Blood Guard, against us. We stood them up and our flanking unit, headed by Sir Giotto and followed by Wolfstar, shredded them.
In the final Castle Battle, Bryn Gwlad and Southern were assigned to defend the breach on the left side of the castle as you're looking out. Early in the siege and with large, intact Trimarran units in place all around the castle, BG received orders to sally out and attack. This had not been part of the original battle plan and had us heading into the teeth of vastly superior numbers. Our unit and parts of Wolfstar responded immediately and without hesitation. We hit the Trimarrans, fought well and hard, but were overwhelmed by superior numbers. Our attack drew three Trimarran units off the front gate allowing the Midrealm and the rest of Ansteorra to attack out the main gate and hit the Trimarrans while they were out of position and unprepared.
A friend of mine in Wolfstar said it best--"I don't mind being the bait, as long as we catch the fish."
Every fighter in Bryn Gwylad did an outstanding job.
I especially want to thank Don Maelgwyn and Lord Lazlo for serving as my lieutenants in the unit. You guys did a great job.
This was a great start for our melee unit and one Heck of a War.
Yours in Service to Bryn Gwlad and Ansteorra,
Centurion Uther Blackthorne
Commander, Chivalric Forces of Bryn Gwlad
