[Bryn-gwlad] A Gulf War Tale

I am not a fighter, but I enjoy watching the fighting. The ravine battle is
my favorite battle because it is easy to watch the entire field and get a
feel for what is happening.

This year, I stood at the side of the ravine waiting for the battle to begin
with a group of friends. I think the crowd watching was just as anxious for
the lay on as the fighters below. When the signal sounded there was a great
rush towards the middle of the field. For some reason, our focus was drawn
towards a single fighter dashing across the bottom of the ravine towards the
middle banner. We watched as he faced three or four fighters at the banner
and was slain. He rose quickly and ran back to the res point only to turn
and come running back into the fray.

As the battle wore on, we were distracted by other skirmishes (and a certain
king cartwheeling down the side of the ravine) but our eyes kept being drawn
to the fighter who trudged back and forth across the bottom of the ravine,
always diving into the middle of action when he reached the middle banner.

There were several of us up there who know the fighters well. None of us
could figure out who this fighter was. He seemed larger than life even from
the top of the hill. We were tossing around names of the biggest fighters we
could think of but none of them fit...we could tell he was a knight with
many battles under his belt from the way he walked into the fight and the
white belt. He was hungry and seemed driven by a purpose. We asked several
fighters who were passing to res point who he was but no one could place
him.

It was only later that we found out the fighter's name. It was Duke Ulsted
who trudged countless times back and forth from the res point but never
seemed to tire. We had declared him the MVP of the battle from the stands.
He was driven because he had been tasked to take and hold the middle banner
at all costs by his king...but you will need to ask him for the rest of the
story :)

Just one of those moments that I remember from war...
