Unite and unite, and let us all unite
For summer is a-comin' today.
And whither we are going we all will unite
In the merry morning of May!
- The Padstow Song
May Day was traditionally the first day of summer
(which explains why Midsummer Day is June 22nd).
Everyone seemed to understand that this was as
good a reason as any to frolic in the fields!
At some point the first day of summer changed.
I'm guessing that it happened in the late
16th century when the Pope Gregory decreed that
the faithful world should use the Gregorian
calendar instead of the Julien calendar.
(The Brits didn't get around to changing it
until 1752). The festivals continue!
