By Barnet either.  I've seen focused lists degenerate into mindless
chatter, cascades, and general off-topic uselessness, so it's quite
valid to worry about whether the list is keeping a good
signal-to-noise.

My premise was stated by Robin of Gilwell, I think: "Short is good.
Funny is good.  Short and funny is better.  Look at Pepin Moroni."
If I go off-topic, for the most part I try to keep it to a short
zinger that doesn't disrupt the flow of conversation (by being
controversial, offensive, or whatever).  They may smile or not, but
they quickly hit delete.  Like court: occasional touches of humor or
the unexpected liven it up; having little but schtick after schtick is
like eating a block of icing with no cupcakes.
