Subject: [Central] Recruitment/Demo possibility for 2005

There will be a new Renaissance/Medieval Fair starting up near Hillsboro
TX., which is tentatively named Middlefaire. Hillsboro is located about
halfway between the DFW area and Waco. The Faire Coordinator would very
much like the SCA to participate and has told me that for the most part
that we would have a blank canvas to work with as far as what we do out
there. Due to the effects of Mother Nature they are planning on breaking
ground in October of this year, and also will have potable running water
piped into certain areas of the grounds.

Initially they are planning 2 or 3 one-weekend events as part of their
start-up instead of trying to run a multi-weekend faire such as TRF or
Scarborough. The Faire Coordinator is aware that we have many events
through out the year and that our attendance may be sparse or
non-existent at times. Tentatively their first weekend is planned for
the weekend of July 15-17, 2005 which is the weekend of King’s Round
Table, but as the majority of our members do not attend Round Table
hopefully we would still be able to field a good level of presence. It
is currently planned that the first weekend will have a
Renaissance/Swashbuckler theme, which would be a good showcase for the
Rapier community.

The middle of Summer at this location is sunny and hot however I have
been told that due to the location evenings are pleasant and breezy so
accordingly their hours will run longer into the evening hours. There is
space available for on premise camping, which will need to be mowed
prior to use.

Some of the ideas that have been brought that we can/might be able to do
would be Chivalric Combat, Rapier Combat, Youth Combat, Archery (with us
being able to set up a semi-permanent archery range), Equestrian
activities, and A&S demos. SCA merchants who are selling their wares as
well as doing demonstrations of their craft would be allowed on site for
free as well as allowed to sell, merchants who just wish to sell would
be charged a nominal fee yet to be determined. We could also use this to
showcase our Bards and let them gain exposure that they normally would
not receive.

Initially I feel that the use of period pavilions would work best for
this project and making our own compound/structure to house us when we
are there is welcomed by the Faire. Mundanities will need to be covered
as much as possible. Period mugs and feast gear would be desired for use
there. Smoking of cigarettes should be done where it is not readily
obvious, however pipes should be okay.

I will be having a meetings with the Coordinator periodically throughout
the year, so please if there are any questions that you would liked
answered please send them to me so I can get them answered. Depending on
what kind of response I receive about this I will see about setting up a
listserver either on ansterorra.org or at another site to keep those
interested informed.

Thank you for your time.
