I second the "something they can use..." and would add on "...at an SCA event."  A decorated wooden cup, a medieval game or toy, a simple musical instrument, etc...

Other ideas:
How about a decorated leather pouch of marbles?
Or a wooden TV table with a Nine-Men-Morris, Fox & Geese, or Chess/checkers gameboard painted on the top?
Beads (unstrung) are always a favorite with my daughter...
A wooden box of watercolor paints with a sablehair paintbrush.
A set of air-dry clay, in earthtone colors.
A book of fairytales.
A charcoal pencil & leatherbound sketchpad.
...
