If you just want a pattern then any kind of fabric that is one and half yards
by 60" width  will do.  If you want to make a pair then you are looking for a
knit type fabric that stretches in only one direction.  Most folks use a 100%
cotton teeshirt knit type material that comes in a variety of weights.
Depending on the fabric these sometimes have a texture that approximates a
wool.  There are also some nice wool knits out there that are lightweight and
very comfortable, but they are hard to find.  Most other fabrics can be used
if they are cut on the diagonal as this will also provide some measure of
stretch.  The reason for stretching in one direction is that it can be
stretched around the leg for a closer fit, but not droop down the front if it
were able to stretch in both directions.
