The Code of Chivalry can be found in chronicles of medieval history,
but issues regarding chivalrous behavior and knightly ideals can also
be found in today's headlines. Here are some recent news stories that
demonstrate what an important role chivalry plays in our world. Follow
the links at the end of each blurb (or cut-and-paste them into your
browser's address window) to get more details - then discuss and
explore these stories with friends, family members and co-workers as a
means of bringing chivalry to life in the modern world.

- Sing A Song of Chivalry -
The music industry has made a strong push to cut down on "file
sharing," claiming that freely exchanging digital music over the
Internet robs artists and performers of their rightful dues, and is a
violation of copyright laws. These claims have been the source of both
public debate and legal action - yet, as the following news report
demonstrates, many record labels don't have a stainless reputation when
it comes to observing contractual obligations and paying performers
their dues. Audits reveal that record companies are often caught
withholding thousands of dollars from performers and writers. Whether
these monetary oversights are due to negligence or deliberate
miscalculation is a matter of contention, but in either case, this
story is a reminder of the importance of unimpeachable just and fair
behavior - and of the corrosive effects of its lack.

How does negligent behavior on the part of record manufacturers affect
consumers' respect for artists' work? See what you think after
listening to the following story: (You'll need RealAudio to listen to
this streaming audio file.)

- Board With Chivalry -
Plato said, "You can discover more about a person in an hour of play
than in a year of conversation." With those wise words in mind, it's
nice to know that interest in board games is on the rise - from
classics like backgammon and chess to more contemporary favorites like
Trivial Pursuit and Scrabble. Playing games is a great way to practice
the ideals of chivalry by engaging in a competitive pastime with
respectful, dignified, noble behavior. Whether games are played by
family members at the dinner table, friends at a party or new
acquaintances at a club or coffee shop, they are a great way to
reaffirm the challenges and rewards of fair play and self discipline.

Games can be a whimsical diversion, but they can also be valuable
teaching tools. As you'll see in this story, some businesses have put
games to use as an innovative marketing tool. What other ways could
simple games be used in the workplace, in school or on athletic
organizations to help build team spirit, competitive drive and respect
for the rules?

- Memorial Day: Knights in Shining Armor -
Next Monday is Memorial Day, a time set aside to honor those who have
served their country gallantly, who have protected those in need and
who have risked, and sometimes made the ultimate sacrifice for the
cause of freedom. With various unpleasant and unsettling news stories
erupting in the realms of politics and world events, it's easy to lose
sight of the fact that most soldiers in today's armed forces are brave,
noble individuals truly worthy to be called "knights in shining armor."

Here are two stories that are great reminders of the courage and
dedication of the men and women in uniform who live and serve by the
Code of Chivalry - all of whom deserve a salute this Memorial Day.

- Chivalry Quote of the Week -
"Do you know what 'knight' means? It is an old, old word. It means a
servant, and that is well thought out, because who would be master must
learn his trade by being mastered."
- John Steinbeck
