Dearest Galen,
May I have permission to publish this submission as an attachment
to the heralds office report. He has submitted an article concerning
these grant level awards but only discusses the badges and their
blazons. This is very timely and appropriate and fits nicely. Please,
please please!!!???!!! Arabella ( I know you'll say yes but I have to
do the honourable thing and ask first. Besides it's my job to ask,
comes with the position. )

> DON Llywelyn at Elfsea Defender!
>as well as
>Sir Aaron MacGregor, Warlord of Ansteorra
>and
>Sir Gunthar Jonsson, King's Champion
>
>And now, Galen's interesting historical comments:
>
>The Order of the White Scarf includes at least one married couple,
>but soon-to-be-Don Llywelyn, with his brother Don Maelgwyn, will make
>the first pair of brothers in the Order.
>
>His Lordship Almar is in a rare position, having received his Grant
>of Arms in the same calendar year as his Award of Arms (he was given
>his AoA at the Baronial Passage of Arms, though I think it was
>dated earlier).
>
>Sir Aaron, who was knighted this past May, was the first belted fighter
>in several years to win the Kingdom Warlord Tourney; his predecessor
>won the tourney twice in a row prior to his knighting.
>
>And with three of our folks being promoted with Grants of Arms
>(also called Grants of Rank), a note about Grants of Arms for
>our newer members seems in order.
>
>Duke John the Bearkiller once described the Grant of Arms to
>newcomers as a "Super Award of Arms".
>
>Grants of Arms have always carried the titles "Lord" or
>"Lady", but more recently have also carried the honorifics
>"The Honorable Lord/Lady (name)" or "Your/His Lordship".
>Both of these forms are post-period usages, but so much of
>our rank structure is either post-period or just wholly
>independent of historical hierarchies at all.
>
>In Ansteorra, Grants are rarely bestowed, except with the
>rank of Court Baron, or in conjuction with one of the four
>"Grant-level" Orders:
>
>The Order of the Star of Merit of Ansteorra is given for
>outstanding service to the Kingdom. Local members include
>HL Dana mac an Ghabhan, our Baroness, Xene, and myself.
>The regalia is a gold garter, edged in black, with a black
>star on it, worn above the left elbow or below the right
>knee.
>
>The Order of the Iris of Merit of Ansteorra is given for
>excellence in the Arts and Sciences. Local members include
>Mistress Stella, Mistress Rhiain, Mistress Eowyn (virtually
>all our Laurels, as well as HL Robin, and Baroness Xene.
>The regalia is a ribbon striped red, orange, yellow, green,
>blue, indigo and violet, with a gold line between each color,
>worn around the shoulder (originally the charter specified the
>right shoulder, but was later amended for either shoulder,
>and the left is more popular).
>
>The Order of the White Scarf of Ansteorra carries the title
>"Don" or "Dona", and is given for excellence in rapier combat
>combined with the chivalric and gentlemanly virtures. Llywelyn
>will be our first local Don, but oft-seen examples include
>Don Robin of Gilwell, Don Alaric, and Don Miguel. The Crown
>is required to seek the counsel of the Companions of this
>Order before creating new Companions. The regalia is a
>white scarf worn around the left shoulder, or sometimes tied
>around the upper left arm.
>
>The newest of these is the Order of the Centurions of the
>Sable Star of Ansteorra, whose companions may be styled
>"Centurion". This award is still evolving in terms of exactly
>what standards and virtues it seeks to recognize, beyond
>simply excellence in chivalric combat. Local or nearby
>Centurions include Centurion Tor, Centurion Miguel, and
>Centurion Robin of Gilwell. The regalia of this order includes
>a black garter edged in gold, with a gold star on it, as well
>as a cloak bearing the badge of the order.
>
>I hope this is of interest.
