Have you tried the various breed rescue people? The Greyhound rescue
group was at the PetSmart off I-20 last weekend. They save retired
racing greys & whippets. An amazing dog, I was told they have "bursts of
energy, then relapse back into couch potatos"! Also, whippets available
sometimes (smaller but still elegant). Also the Sheltie rescuers are in
the metroplex. I've seen them in McKinney a lot during the town's many
fests. All the animals are older animals and well-trained. There's
rescue groups for nearly every breed, including pugs, Boston terriers, &
bulldogs! If you want a small house-horse, there are some Rottweilers
(very smart, very protective of their families, but NEVER get a
puppy-mill product) and I know of at least one Mastiff (I think they get
allocated one per state) in the Benbrook area. Remember the energy level
you're looking for (a friend had to put down her old Basset hound & got
a Scottie--she was overwhelmed by the difference in energy levels
between the breeds.) and Good Luck on the hunt. :-)
