A young Scotsman moved to New York and rented an apartment in
a nice
quiet neighborhood. Shortly thereafter, as mothers will, his
mother phoned
him from Scotland to see how he was faring in the big city, how
he liked his
job, his new quarters etc.
.
He reported that he was doing well, liked his new job, liked
the
city, and liked his new apartment. She asked about his
neighbors, had he met
them, did he like them, were they nice? He reported that he had
not met
them, only seen them in the halls, and that they were really
strange people.
The man on one side of him spent a great deal of time beating
his head on
their common wall, and the lady on the other side had fits of
screaming
obscenities and moaning and crying.
Mother advised him to avoid them whenever possible and leave
them
strictly alone. The young Scot replied that he was doing exactly
that. He
said that he spent most of his spare time alone in his apartment
playing his
bagpipe.
