Galen here...

+ Volunteering is a Good Thing.

+ No one can volunteer for everything.

+ Announcing that you'll be there to do something
is a fine idea. A private note to the person
running the thing is better, but public promises
of support are good, too.

+ Announcing that you won't be helping out with
a project is not necessary (unless you've previously
promised to be there), and it would be a real shame
for anyone to mistakenly fix on such an announcement
as an indicator of how much a person does.

+ A large and healthy SCA branch will sometimes schedule
local activities opposite out-of-town events, and let
its members choose whether to travel or stay in town.
Those who are travelling are fulfilling their duties
as SCA members (which include supporting other branches,
learning new skills, meeting new people, representing
their local group elsewhere, and -- important! -- having
fun), and sometimes as Companions of Orders or as Officers.
Those who do the local activity are also fulfilling their
duties as SCA members, directly supporting their own
local group. The branch wouldn't be large or healthy
without people fulfilling both roles; some of us do
one more than the other, but neither role is more
important: both are vital.

+ To those of you who are travelling this weekend,
travel well, have fun, and may clement weather attend
you.  To those working the demo, I'll see you there;
I'm sure it'll be a fine time. To those doing neither,
I hope your personal circumstances allow you to participate
more soon.
