Greetings from Armand,

While it might ruffle feathers, couldn't we avoid purchasing tables by
arranging tables to allow for people all on one side for the majority of the
tables and use some with people on both sides (with the table heads pointed
towards the stage for easier viewing by those individuals)?

As for pre-reservations....I tend to agree that that might create more
hassles then it alleviates, and I suspect there will still be disgruntled
participants who will have missed the instructions (for whatever reason) and
arrive early expecting things to be first come-first serve. While it would
be nice to allow group reservations to allow friends to sit together, I
don't know how you do that without reserving specific seat assignments,
which obviously gives the organizing group an unfair advantage. It kind of
grates on my sense of chivalry to guarantee that 'Elfsea' gets the best
seats. But maybe that's my inexperience talking and it's traditionally
accepted that the organizers get that advantage?

At any rate, if it's decided to pre-register seat assignments for groups
and/or individuals then one approach, (with an attempt at fairness) is by
agreeing on the table layout well in advance and publicizing it. Then
allowing groups or individuals to indicate their top 3 seating preferences
when they send payment to pre-register. (Much in the same way I reserve
booth space at a convention.) There would be a disclaimer that preferences
will be given when possible, but of course, conflicts will arise and either
a follow-up communication will have to be made or an arbitrary decision made
on the part of the 'seating coordinator'.) It 'could' work well and a
seating chart could even be providing at the hall entrance to help people
locate their seat or group, as well as other groups or friends. The
bickering should be kept to a minimum since there is a public seating chart
to act as referee. However, I don't know that there's enough time to allow
for this approach or if it's even much of an improvement over the first
come-first served seating.

Please note that I'm not advocating one way or another. I'm just adding food
for thought. If it were left to me, I suspect I would leave it as simply a
first come-first seated arrangement and be prepared to deal with the
problems that arise with that.
