Has anyone ever tried renting out a local Boy Scout facility? The Longhorn
Council in Ft. Worth has a property with showers and bathroom facilities (though
they aren't true indoor facilities; more like shower "shelters") on Lake
Bridgeport called Sid Richardson Scout Ranch. It's got as much room as anyone
would ever need to hold a Defender event. It also has an indoor dining facility
(for feasts/court), a pool, and archery ranges. Hotels/restaurants, etc. can be
found in Bridgeport. I know that at least one SCA group has used the Longhorn
Council's facility at Worth Ranch on the Brazos River (other side of Mineral
Wells) because they were there when I had my Scout troop there last spring, so
the Council couldn't have too much problem with it. This group was, I believe,
an Explorer Post so it may be possible to gain access to the facility through
them (although I don't know where they were from or what the SCA name for their
group was). All that said, it still seems like Canton will be pretty hard to
beat.
