ES - Membership trend

Hearth and home should certainly come before membership in
any group. Membership in the SCA is entirely optional. You
can do anything except hold an office (partly due to the
liability question) without it. No other group in which
I have been a member is that open.

I can say with certainty that in Elfsea, membership has
no bearing at all on recognition. Yes, officers do tend
to be recognized for the work they do (after all, they
are doing large amounts of work to benefit our group),
but many other people are recognized for their efforts
without being an officer or a member. We watch who
shows up to help load the trailer before an event,
who does setup, who does break down, who is always ready
to help someone set up a tent, who volunteers to be a
server at feast, who becomes a waterbearer, who spends
the extra time to get their garb "just right", who
tries a little of everything to see where their interests
lie, and who begins teaching others.

We would like more people to be members because it shows
Elfsea to be an active, growing group in the eyes of the
BoD. This is not as important as many other things, but
would be nice. Getting the Black Star and some of the
other publications also helps our populace keep up to
date on upcoming events.
