Dear Bree,

I believe the first "underwear" were braies: basically a loincloth folder 
"diaperlike".  There is an article on it here:

And, if you follow the links, you can also learn how to make them.  I am 
trying to get my husband to convert to this style, but I need to find 
documentation for about 100 years earlier.
