Dear Jen,

Many things have been used to construct award medallions however the 
sturdier kinds are more often approved of.

Preferences go towards (in this order, mostly):

metal - decorated with pierce work, enameled, etched, cast, etc.
stone - also carved, polished
wood - painted, carved
embroidered pieces (well backed, sturdy pieces)
leather (rarely looks good, but there are exceptions)

The awards that Darius specified in his last note would best be put on 
medallions and used as pendants or pins.  If you get a chance, come to Moot 
(or an event) and take a look at awards people wear.  It may give you ideas.
