I don't think it was you that the populace was fussing about as much as they were fussing about someone else'S comments. Considering the fact that my father is a retired policeman, I can understand and can acknowledge that there are those in authority (and a shame to those in authority) who abuse their power (as can happen in any job situation). I also know how vindictive people can be such as Evil Neighbor to blame those who are innocent for their own vengence and political views.  In your case, I would consider getting a real good lawyer for her constant harrasement, and see what can be done to stop this woman for abusing her "friends in high places" act.  If you need, I can ask around as to who would (lawyer-wise) would be good for you... after all, I work for a VERY PROMINENT man (as in world reknown, LITERALLY!)who could probably give me a good recommendation of who to send you to. Play by the rules, and pull your "friends in high places" card too! After all, you DO have all of us to support you! Let Rebekah know who your case worker is too... she has some "friends in high places" cards too!
