Yes and no, the soft "z" is the proper Castillan
pronounciation. The soft "th" or "sh" is and was done
out of respect for King Phillip III, The Holy Roman
Emporor, who had a giant cleft pallet and a very
pronounced chin. Any soft "th" or "sh" sound when
pronouncing any "s" sounding letter in any spanish
language, whether it be Puerto Rican, Mexican, Cuban,
or yes even proper Castillan, is merely a form of
slang that has been around for about 500 years.
